Why insight alone doesn’t create change

Many people reach a point where they understand themselves well.
They can recognise recurring patterns, notice familiar triggers, and understand where certain responses may come from, yet those patterns can still be difficult to change.

This is not a lack of effort or awareness.
More often, it’s because behaviour is influenced by the nervous system, the body, emotional learning, and subconscious protective responses.

Until that system feels regulated and supported, insight alone rarely leads to lasting change. Patterns don’t disappear through force or willpower. They shift when understanding is matched with safety, integration, and the right kind of attention.

I am Dirk van Wyk, a registered Kinesiopractor, hypnotherapist, counsellor, life coach and behavioural specialist based in George, Western Cape, South Africa. I work with clients both in person and online, using an integrated approach to explore emotional, behavioural and body-based patterns.

How I understand human behaviour

My work is based on a simple but often overlooked principle: human behaviour is not driven by logic alone. It is shaped by emotional memory, subconscious protection, and the body’s need for safety.

When people struggle to change, it is rarely because they don’t know what to do. More often, their system has learned, consciously or unconsciously, that certain emotions, responses, or patterns may once have served a protective purpose.

Rather than trying to override these responses, I work with the system as it is. By paying attention to how the body responds, how the nervous system regulates, and how subconscious patterns organise behaviour, change becomes less about effort and more about alignment.

This approach allows patterns to soften naturally, without force, urgency, or pressure, creating change that feels stable, grounded, and sustainable.

Ways people work with me

People come into this work at different points, and for different reasons. These are the most common ways we work together.

Private Work

One-to-one sessions focused on understanding and working through emotional, behavioural, or physical patterns as they present in your life.

This work is practical, body-aware, and paced according to what your system can integrate safely.

Ongoing Support and Coaching

For those who want continuity and deeper integration over time.

This may include a combination of sessions, reflection, and guidance as patterns unfold and stabilise across different areas of life.

Speaking & Workshops

Talks and facilitated experiences focused on emotional patterns, behavioural dynamics, and the human system’s relationship with change, for groups, organisations, and events.

Practical work

Alongside the broader perspective shared here, I also work practically with individuals who are looking for direct, hands-on support.

This includes approaches such as Kinesiopractic®, hypnotherapy, counselling, life coaching, and brain integration, used as needed, rather than as isolated techniques. Behavioural and character assessment models provide foundational personal insights that can help guide the work in a meaningful and practical way.

The focus is always on understanding what is happening in the system, and responding in a way that supports regulation, clarity, and integration.
